This paper presents the enhancement of voltage sags/swell harmonic distortion and low power factor using Distribution Static Compensator (D-STATCOM). The model is based on the Voltage Source Converter (VSC) principle. The D-STATCOM injects a current into the system to mitigate the voltage sags/swell. to improve harmonic distortion and low power factor. In this paper Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) is used for voltage stability and the compensation of reactive power. The STATCOM contains an Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT) based voltage source converter for voltage control and reactive power compensation. The STATCOM is used to control the reactive power with the voltage source converter in combination with a DC voltage source. The values of the DC link capacitor and battery source were optimized using the Genetic Algorithm technique and the simulations results for the same were observed under the inductive as well as capacitive load conditions. The comparison of voltage compensation for various conditions show that the performance of STATCOM tuned with GA was the best and closest to the nominal value of voltage. The simulation is done in MATLAB for STATCOM and Voltage Source Converter (VSC).

In this paper, the performance of voltage-source converter-based shunt and series compensators used for load voltage control in electrical power distribution systems has been analyzed and compared, when a nonlinear load is connected across the load bus. The comparison has been made based on the closed-loop frequency response characteristics of the compensated distribution system. A distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM) as a shunt device and a dynamic voltage restorer (DVR) as a series device are considered in the voltage-control mode for the comparison.

An optimal coordinated control strategy between generator and VSC HVDC system is proposed in this paper. In the studied system, a generator is connected with infinite bus through parallel AC lines and VSC HVDC. The simulation results show that both the generator and the VSC HVDC system can be recovered rapidly from minor or severe disturbance, and the control strategy is robust to the parameter variety of power system. Simulation are also conducted when the generator and VSC HVDC system are controlled independently. The simulation results also show that the system has much better dynamic responses with the proposed coordinated control strategy than that with the independent control.

Model of VSC with three value transistor branch state function is introduced to describe operation of VSC. Predictive-corrective control method of VSC system is presented. Two variants of Space Vector PWM methods for VSC system are developed. Algorithm of cancelation of negative influence of dead time on the AC voltages is implemented in the proposed modulation methods. Correctness of introduced method is validated by simulation and experiment investigations.
